Cyber Security Engineer IV

In celebration of Availity’s 25th anniversary, we’re highlighting associates whose impact and dedication have helped shape who we are today. Through this special Associate Spotlight series, we’re honoring the people behind our story—past, present, and future.

In this Q&A, we’re proud to spotlight Raghu S., who shares reflections on his journey, the moments that mattered most, and what continues to inspire him as part of Availity.

When did you join Availity, what was your first role, and what stands out most from your early days?

I joined Fore Support Services in 2012 as a system administrator, before Fore was acquired by Availity in 2017. Since then, I have progressed through several engineering roles, including network engineer, cloud engineer, network security engineer, and now cybersecurity engineer. What stands out most is how the organization recognized my interests and capabilities and gave me opportunities to grow. I had always been curious about computer security, and Availity helped me turn that interest into a career.

What’s kept you here the longest?

The opportunities to learn, take on new challenges, and grow into roles that match my skills have kept me here. Whenever I considered taking a different path, Availity presented a meaningful new opportunity that renewed my motivation and helped me continue developing professionally.

How has your role evolved since you started?

My role has evolved from maintaining systems to designing, securing, and improving increasingly complex technology environments. I moved from system administration into networking and cloud engineering, then into network security and cybersecurity. With each transition, my focus expanded from keeping individual systems operational to managing risk, strengthening resilience, and protecting services and data across the organization.

Looking back, what advice would you give your first-day self?

Stay curious, keep learning, and do not limit yourself to the responsibilities of your current role. Volunteer for difficult assignments, build strong fundamentals, and trust that consistent effort will create opportunities you may not yet be able to see.

What’s a moment when you realized the work we do matters beyond our walls?

I realized the broader impact of our work when I considered the scale and sensitivity of the healthcare information our systems support. A security control, investigation, or availability improvement may seem technical, but it helps protect trust, continuity, and access across a healthcare ecosystem that affects millions of people.

When you think about our Core Values, which one resonates most with you, and why?

The Core Value that resonates most with me is staying curious and continuously learning. Throughout my career at Availity, curiosity has helped me move across system administration, networking, cloud, network security, and cybersecurity. It encourages me to challenge assumptions, keep building my skills, and find better ways to protect the technology and information that support healthcare.

What excites you most about where Availity is headed next?

I am especially excited about Availity’s early and responsible adoption of AI. Associates are being encouraged to learn, experiment, and innovate with these technologies. I look forward to seeing how secure, well-governed AI and automation can simplify healthcare workflows, strengthen trust, and ultimately create meaningful benefits for providers, health plans, and patients.

What are three words you’d use to describe Availity today?

Innovative, collaborative, and purposeful.

What’s one way your team quietly helps simplify healthcare that most people outside Availity would never notice?

My team quietly helps simplify healthcare by protecting the technology infrastructure and information that keep critical services available and trustworthy. Most people may never see the monitoring, investigation, access controls, and preventive work behind the scenes, but those efforts help protect millions of health records and keep essential systems running smoothly despite daily cyber threats.

What’s one process, tool, or way of working that has changed during your time here?

The shift from primarily on-premises infrastructure and manually managed processes to cloud platforms, automation, and data-driven security operations has been significant. Our tools and practices now provide greater visibility, faster response, and more consistent controls across a much larger and more complex environment.

What makes the people at Availity unique?

Availity’s people combine deep expertise with a genuine willingness to collaborate. They are curious, approachable, and ready to share what they know, which makes it easier to solve complex problems and continue learning from one another.

If you could preserve one thing about Availity for the next generation of associates, what would it be?

I would preserve Availity’s culture of giving associates opportunities to learn, take on new challenges, and grow into roles that match their interests and strengths. That support has shaped my own career and continuing it will help the next generation build meaningful careers while contributing new ideas to the organization.

What do you think will define Availity’s next chapter of growth?

Availity’s next chapter of growth will be defined by secure, responsible innovation that makes healthcare more connected, efficient, and easier to navigate. The ability to use data, AI, automation, and modern platforms while maintaining trust, privacy, and resilience will be essential to delivering lasting value.

What makes you most optimistic about Availity’s next 25 years?

I am optimistic because Availity has a strong foundation of healthcare expertise, trusted relationships, talented associates, and a willingness to embrace change. By combining these strengths with responsible innovation in AI, automation, cloud, and cybersecurity, Availity is well positioned to simplify healthcare even further over the next 25 years.

What is one area where you think Availity can make an even bigger impact in the years ahead?

Availity can make an even bigger impact by using secure technology and trusted data exchange to reduce administrative complexity across healthcare. Simplifying workflows and improving interoperability can help providers and health plans spend less time on processes and more time supporting better healthcare experiences and outcomes.

Thank you, Raghu, for your dedication and the impact you’ve had in shaping Availity’s story. We’re grateful for all you do as we celebrate 25 years of Availity!
