2001: Availity was formed in Jacksonville, Fla., as a joint venture between Florida Blue (formerly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida) and Humana in an effort to improve efficiency and reduce administrative complexity in the health care industry, with the ultimate goal of improving health care outcomes.
2006: Availity combined with The Health Information Network, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Care Service Corporation, which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The merger expanded Availity’s national footprint and accelerated the company’s ability to accommodate large-scale “batch” data transmissions.
2009: WellPoint, which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans in 14 states, selected Availity as a strategic part of its suite of online provider solutions and made an investment in Availity’s multi-plan platform. Later that year, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota joined Availity and replaced its own electronic health information network, ClearConnect.
2010: Availity acquires RealMed, an award-winning provider of revenue cycle management services. The acquisition positioned the combined enterprise to deliver health information solutions to a nationally expanding network of providers, health plans and vendor partners.
2014: Availity acquired Nashville, Tennessee-based RevPoint Healthcare Technologies to help providers increase patient collections at the beginning of the revenue cycle process. The acquisition simplifies “up-front” payment processes for providers and their patients, and adds patient access capabilities to Availity’s revenue cycle product suite.
