Jacksonville, Fla., March 23, 2016 – Children’s Home Society of Florida, Buckner Division hosted its annual “Under the Tent” awards luncheon today to recognize and honor outstanding individuals and organizations for their work in the interest of underserved children.
WJXT Channel 4 anchor Rob Sweeting emceed the event and as he announced each award more than 150 people gathered on the CHS campus in support and admiration of the esteemed honorees.
The Foster Parents of the Year were Freddie and Deborah Dempsey, who began fostering children more than 10 years ago. They are a part of the Medical Foster Care Program caring for children with great medical and physical challenges after facing severe abuse.
Anne and Sam Langley were awarded Volunteers of the Year for their dedicated service to the Teen Parent Program. The Langleys work year-round with the teen mothers building trust and providing loving support.
ADT Security Services claimed the Corporate Citizen of the Year award for its generous initiatives benefiting CHS and many other charities. ADT, L.L.C. is a Caring Chefs sponsor and created a quarterly carnival for the children and their families to play and bond on the CHS campus.
Rep. Cyndi Stevenson was named Public Official of the Year for her child advocacy through her legislative work. Stevenson is a wonderful advocate for child mental health services and child abuse prevention.
Child Advocate of the Year was presented to Mr. Russ Thomas, CEO of Availity. Russ is the current Northeast Florida United Way Campaign Chair. Russ was adopted through CHS in Tampa. He would later join their board and continue his efforts to break the cycle of child abuse after moving to Northeast Florida. His employees volunteer for Achievers for Life and work with Ribault Middle School students.
